Behind the Blue Doors of CMS...
The Cumberland Middle School Extension had a fantastic start to the new year. We enjoyed a month full of Myth Busting programs and started a fun Pen Pal program with the Cumberland Care and Rehab. Our members will write to them weekly and visit them one to two times a month. We are hoping that our first meeting will be on Valentine’s Day where our members will deliver handcrafted Valentine’s Day cards.
For our Myth Busting experiments this month we tested the myth that pop rocks candy combined with sparkling soda would create a small explosion if consumed. Our members were disappointed to find out that this experiment was busted, and the reaction was only a mild fizzing reaction. Another favorite of our Myth Busting experiments was testing if different clear liquids would glow a different color under blue light. We tested regular tap water, tonic water, and lemon-lime soda. The water and lemon-lime soda remained clear in color, however, the tonic water glowed a faint bluish-green tint of color under the light.
Our crafty members enjoyed showing off their creativity with some fun painting projects along with their fan-favorite of making slime. Once again to step up our slime making skills we made chalkboard slime, I think the staff enjoying making it just as much as the members! The members were amazed that using a little chalkboard paint along with regular slime they were able to draw on their slime with chalkboard paint pens. It was fun to see the different designs the kids made and how creative they were.
In an effort to give back to our county, we went and volunteered at the Humane Society Barron County. The members enjoyed walking the dogs and playing with the cats. The staff at the shelter are always so welcoming and are always willing to answer all of the members’ questions. The residents at the shelter really love the extra attention and while the kids are having fun they are learning the proper care for animals.
We are happy to announce that Julius L. is our member of the month for January. Julius has excelled in his positive attitude that he has been bringing into club this month. He has been participating more and more and is loving our new mini BGC library we purchased with money from a recent grant we received.
